10 Mom Lessons

I was thinking the other day what a tremendous year of growth it has been for me. With age comes wisdom, with being a parent comes love and being married comes patience. I thought I would jot down just a couple of things that I learned this year.

1. Cutting your hair is quite simply never a good idea. I fell victim to the mom chop, thanks in part to what I lovingly refer to as "hair horns" (the pieces growing back in near your temples). Never again. No really, never allow me to do that again.

2. Making your babies food is awesome. So is not making it. Once David had his injury it was the first thing I eliminated from my growing list of responsibilities. I've never looked back and now P is not just eating sweet potatoes.

3. To all those people that said don't cut the tags off. Well with me you were wrong. I made sure my little lady wore it ALL. I mean it's so dang cute how could I not?!
4. Marriage is hard work, bringing a baby into the mix doesn't make it easier! I think the key to great marriages is to fall in love with the same person over and over again. It won't always be easy, but it will always be worth it.

5. The baby will most likely fall off the bed...and survive. It happens.

6. You will never realize how much joy you can get from a sneeze, hiccup or toot. As long as it's from the baby - it's pretty darn adorable.

7. It's okay to reassess a lot of your choices after starting a family. If your current situation no longer suits you, time to find something better. Leaving our hometown for a bigger property and less stresses is something we often dream about.

8. It's okay to admit you don't know what you're doing. When you're too shy to ask, the internet (especially all my wonderful blogger mama's) are an awesome resource. I have made many a friend and I want to give a special shout out to Jen (who I totally discovered via a shared #13weeks hashtag on Instagram #imastalker) for all the late night emails and texts in those early days!
9. 8 hours of sleep is a luxury. You only need a solid 4-5 to survive. If you're lucky like me your baby will eventually sleep through the night. It just took her 10 months to do so...

10. Lastly, I have learned that loving a child is like nothing I could have ever imagined. My heart has never felt more full. It's as close to magic as it gets.

  2. Love these! And yes 4-5 hours of sleep is really all you need! However, I fantasize about me staying in a hotel by myself for a night!

  8. I absolutely love this and totally agree with all of these! Well said! Plus, you also helped me answer the burning question of 'should I cut my hair shorter so it's more low maintenance?' ;-)

  10. Hah, I love these. I used to color my hair for years and decided last year I was going to find a stylist I loved and be pampered, darn it. I'm not brave enough to *cut* my hair.

...and don't feel bad, my 2nd didn't sleep straight through the night uninterrupted until he was 11 months. ;-) 5 hours was my "I think I can function" minimum.
