Things People Tell You

You know the expression "No one told me that was going to happen..." well I feel like in my pregnancy it's quite opposite. People have seemed to tell me a lot. From horrible labor stories to things that happen post baby. So I thought I would share some of those tidbits just in case your friends and families are keeping it PC for you.

 You can't handle the truth
"A couple of weeks before the baby comes you should rough up your nipples because they are going to crack and bleed"
 sawat
"You know how people say sleep now, yeah it won't help you. Hope you have a coffee pot with a timer"

"I suggest buying some witch hazel and pouring it over large maxi pads and then freezing them"
 Oh My God What?
"Mesh underwear is the shit - steal as many as you can from the hospital" (This sage advice has come from numerous people)

"Avoid white clothing for at least 6 weeks post birth"

"Once your pushing that baby out...other things may push out as well"
spry
"You have no idea how little sleep you can actually function on"

"You will be ravenous when you're breast feeding"

"You're scared of birth? Be scared of what comes after..."

  1. LOL!!! I got the same advice! Remember everyone has a different experience and they tend to share their worst. While a couple of things that they warned me about were true, my experience wasn't as bad as what I warned about. Hopfully it will be the same for you too :)

  2. I'm going to second what Amanda said. People have an uncanny way of just popping off with all kinds of comments and advice when you're pregnant {Even though I'm sure they mean well}. Just like every baby and every pregnancy is different for each woman, so is every birth story. Go in to yours with no expectations or pre-concieved notions except to enjoy it and take it as it comes. You will do great. :-)

  5. Hahahah oh no I have heard the same thing from pregnant friends (not me yet). What a nightmare!! I mean I guess being candid is a good thing but that stuff is scary when the baby is still inside you lol!

  7. Hahaha oh my gosh, this makes me 2nd guess pregnancy ;) just kidding. But really, rough up your nipples?! Like how exactly to they recommend doing this....?

  8. Haha this all sounds terrifying! I have heard that about other things that come out... Total shocker. Lol you will be fine though and it will be so worth it all!

  9. Haha I was wondering the same thing as Mia.. what exactly does rough up your nipples mean?!?

  10. These are funny but imo - not much truth to many of them. I never wore mesh undies. Why would you need them? I never used a drop of witch hazel or a single maxi pad after the 3rd day. Babies can surprise you at how easy they can be! The nipple one is probably true. Boobs get super sore and tender. Good Luck!

  11. Hahaha so funny!!! Love this so much. But seriously...just start applying Lanolin to your baby boys and there will be no cracking or bleeding in sight. That stuff is a miracle worker!

  12. BAHAHAHAH! There is some truth to all of these but everyone has different experiences. I was told all of this and was subsequently FREAKED out for what was to come and but I really took it all in stride. It wasn't a big deal and besides the LOVE you gain for this new awesome little life and the 1,000,001 things there are to do keep you too distracted to care!! :)

  13. It's always amazing how people think they are giving helpful advice, when in reality, there's so much you just need to figure out for yourself - what works for you. Hearing a lot of this stuff can be scary for a first time mom.

A friend of mine told me to smile and nod when given advice and then do my own thing.

It's worked pretty well. My 3 year old is a functioning well adjusted kid. I'm due on 7/22 with number 2 - and much more relaxed about everything.

  16. People are so terrible. They think they are "helping" but they're just scaring the shit out of you haha. The awesome part of breast feeding/pumping is definitely that you can so much because you're burning so many calories. The maxi pads in witch hazel, though? What the!?

  17. Ha ha ha wow I would love to meet some of these people! I wonder what witch hazel on maxi pads is supposed to do... hmmm

  18. Bahahaha..these crack me up...especially the nipple one!

  19. The pediatrician I am working with now tells new moms to only let the baby nurse for 5 minutes each side for the first day or so and slowly build it up minute by minute after. I can't imagine that "roughing" those babies up will be comfortable, but he swears by this!

  22. Hilarious and totally true! The worst part is I think them all now that I have had a couple. Lol!

  23. I hate that people are always so quick to share the horror stories! We would all be better off if women were more supportive of new moms! A few tie bits: while my nipples were tender the few first days, breastfeeding was easy & natural and my nipples never cracked or bled! Also, witch hazel is amazing, but your hospital will hook you up with all that you need! Don't fret Laura, you are going to do amazing at the birth and be an incredible mama!

  24. Haha, I remember one of my friends telling me that I should just get depends for after birth because of how much I'll bleed. But for me? I had the easiest labor and after birth. And didn't run into any of the problems above, except for the cracked nipples because little miss didn't latch properly and never did from the get go. You'll do fine :)

  25. Haha! I heard all of it! But I will say the "padcicle" idea was the most helpful/relieving ;) I used non-alcohol witch hazel with lavender, mixed it with aloe, put it on a pad, FROZE it, and breathed a sigh of sweet relief at 3am ;) I can't wait to follow you on your new journey as a mom!

  26. Ohhhh goodness! I advise not roughing up your nipples - ouch! Mine have held up just fine... no cracking, no bleeding, no pain!
