Big Dreams

I never really felt like I was getting older until I turned 30. Every year was just another birthday, one more candle on the cake and one more reason to celebrate.
When I was approaching the age of 30 I was actually excited about entering a new decade because I have come so far from 20. And although there is plenty I miss about being in my early twenties...I'm looking at you fast metabolism. I think there is so much to look forward to in my thirties.

I also think it is too young to have regrets. I mean if you want something you still have plenty of time to go after it. Which leads me to:

What is your dream job?
a housewife with no children
oh what...weird

I have said it on here before that I have an awesome boss. Seriously my review was over cocktails...
However I fell into a job in real estate and I work in a small office (party of two anyone?) and I know that it's not anything I have passion for.

In fact I didn't really know my passion until I rescued this sweet little face
Even though I applied for 21 jobs at Pixar...animals turned out to be where my heart lied.
Pixar hires internally only so I guess I never had a chance considering I didn't know anyone working there.

Does anyone know what they want to be when they are 18 and heading away to college? I sure didn't so I entered into San Diego State as undeclared and proceeded to take classes like art and poly sci...not really having any idea what I wanted to get out of my degree. I wound up graduating with a degree in Communications. I figured it was broad enough that I could continue to try and figure out what I was looking for post college...after all I was only 23.

But then I just needed a job so I took the first one that came my way and sort of got stuck in it. Especially when I took the same type of job in San Francisco for more money...then I really got stuck in it.

So after all this rambling the truth is that I wish I would have known that I wanted to work with animals. If I could have a redo I would have studied to become a veterinarian. And although there are many sad parts of that job I think it is one that ultimately I would have thrived in.

Which leads me to turning 30, there are other things to think about. I want to have children - and I don't see how I could go through schooling and be pregnant and raising babies at the same time. Woman at some point have to choose which basket to put more of their eggs into.

Just my thoughts spewing out, until then I will continue to look for ways I can work with animals that don't involve an MD. Even if it was an office where I could bring Finn to work - that would be a dream come true!

Are you in your dream job? Would you ever start over to get there?

  1. I have given this topic a lot of thought over the years.
The answer is - I really like what I do. The only thing I would change is that I would like to be making documentaries. Interviewing people and telling their stories.
I wouldn't even mind producing E! True HOllywood stories.
The fact is though.. that requires a lot of travel and a lifestyle that isn't very family friendly.
So, instead I produce TV at a bank. Good pay, awesome co-workers and great hours.
    NOt too shabby.

  2. And, BTW.. I'm probably one of the few people that knew what I wanted to do in high school. I was on the newspaper staff and went into college majoring in broadcast journalism. I had a full time job in TV news before I even graduated from college. ;)

  5. I should have been a vet too! If only we could go back in time. I am constantly applying for jobs in NYC with the ASPCA. I think that would be a wonderful place to work because they really are helping to end animal cruelty. Finn is SO cute!

  6. I've recently thought of how silly it is that we have to choose our life path when we're 18...we're so excited for college that we don't even fathom that what he choose to "major" in becomes our life [or at least that was me...]. Yes, then you take any job out of school because "times are tough" with employment...AH! If I could do it over I would do elementary schooling, I enjoy being around kids so much and think I have a special patience for them :)

btw your pup is too adorable, I can see how you'd want to incorporate him into more parts of your life!

  7. If there was a way to get paid (and get benefits) from doing the things I'm truly passionate about, I would be in heaven. Right now I make jewelry on the side and take on an occasional calligraphy job. Definitely not enough to quit my "grown up" job although getting a steady income can be fulfilling in its own way. I guess. :)

  9. I am a new follower, and I want to say I love your blog!

I've changed my major three times! And I still don't know what I want to do! I am working in a job that I could consider my dream job once I can go full time! But to be honest.. I don't think I know what my dream job is!

  10. This post spoke to me. I am also approaching 30, and not to say I have regrets, but I do wish I would have fallen in to a different career. I also think you are never too old or too young to start doing what you love to do :)

I have come soooo far in my company, however, I just have a passion for it...My degree is in Communications and I would love nothing more than to be in front of people..traveling to businesses and schools and doing motivational work :)

  13. I became a nurse later in life. I say later because i didn't go to school for it right out of high school. I didn't even decide to go to nursing school till I was 21 and it took a few years to get pre Reqs out of the way. I didn't actually start nursing school till I was 23 and finished at 25. Now I'm 27 and although I still like nursing I don't love it like I thought I was going to in school. I wish I worked in fashion but I know if I worked in fashion I would wish I had a more rewarding job like nursing. So I can't win. I don't think it's too late for you to become a vet. You might have to hold off on kids for awhile but you gotta choose what will make you happier in life.

  14. I wish I could bring my dog to work, I would be so much happier. Consider volunteering with a rescue! I found one in my area. I already have adopted two dogs, and can not save anymore, but I love helping other people find their four legged kids.

  15. I actually really love my job right now, although it wasn't what I had envisioned. I definitely had to make sacrifices with having kids, but in the end, it's all worked out!

  17. I don't know what my dream job is, Im just too fickle to stick to one thing. I've been working at my job for about 7 months now and I'm starting to take an interest in the veterinary sciences so maybe I might head down that path... :)

  18. My dream job was to be a special education teacher. I did NOT go to college right after high school... I was a little bit of a rebellious kid back then.. but when I did decide to go, it took 10 years (going part time while working.) And now that I've graduated, there is a huge lack of teaching jobs where I live! So my dream job kind of backfired on me!
My second dream job would be to be a full time writer and stay home writing, all while raising the foster children I would take on (definitely a goal if I can ever get my own place to live.) Or maybe owning a book store. That would be cool too, wouldn't it?

  19. It's never too late to become what you want in life! Just a few years of vet school and you would be in the career you love for the rest of your life :) I see how much you love Finn and how passionate you are about animals, I'm sure you would be an AMAZING vet!

I made a mistake with my undergrad degree and am working a job that has nothing to do with it now...and going back to grad school to purse something better (won't be done until I'm 28 or 29)...since I actually know what I want to do now! ;)

Having a family is always on my mind too...if only I was a couple years younger, had picked the right path when I was younger, etc...but there are always ways for everything to work out <3
